Hard Drive Degaussing Service

Degaussing is the most cost-efficient method of destroying 100% of data on hard disk drives (HDD). Hard drives have platters or disks which is “written” on magnetically. To erase these magnetic impressions on the platters, an even stronger magnetic field must be applied to the hard drive.

e-End provides service for degaussing hard drives that is trusted by government, medical, financial, commercial and educational organizations.

Degaussing is a cost-efficient destruction service to guarantee that 100% of data on tape media is destroyed.

e-End provides this quick and convenient service at your facility.

Our data security team can also pick up the tape media to be degaussed and/or shredded at our secure facility.

Our degaussers are approved by the National Security Agency (NSA), listed on the NSA Equipment Product List. We satisfy DoD regulations and guidelines for tape destruction with our unique process for destroying classified material by degaussing and then shredding.

Types of tape data storage devices: Open reel tape, cartridge tape, cassette tape

e-End has the ability to degauss formats that do not fit in modern commercial degaussers, like large open reel tapes.

Magnetic Media Degaussing Service

The destruction of magnetic storage media is our expertise. e-End is certified to sanitize all magnetic storage media by degaussing, using our NSA approved equipment and process.

We have the capability to pull our destruction vehicles up to the client’s loading dock or building and conduct degaussing and shredding operations upon arrival.

Types of magnetic storage media:

  • Open reel tapes

  • Cartridge tapes

  • Cassette tapes

  • Floppy disks

  • Hard Disk Drives

  • Access cards (with magnetic strip)

  • Zip drives

  • and others

Degaussing does not work on some data storage media like optical media and solid state drives (SSD). For these devices, wiping, shredding and incineration are solutions we offer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Degaussing

What is degaussing?

Degaussing – a form of demagnetizing – involves magnetic media, such as a computer tape media, hard disk drive, or film media,  being subjected to an extremely powerful magnet to erase the data stored on the media.

Back to FAQs

How does it work?

After proposal acceptance, e-End will schedule to bring our equipment via our secure trucks to your facility for witnessed on-site degaussing. You may also choose to only have the media picked up by e-End and degaussed at our secure facility.

If you require on-site degaussing, our data security team simply pulls up to your loading dock or access door. Then a count of media and/or serial number capture of media is conducted. Media is then passed through our NSA-evaluated degaussers, ensuring 100% of data has been destroyed.

Degaussed hard drives and media are packed in our secure truck and transported to our secure facility for further recycling. Clients may also choose to have the degaussed hard drives and media shredded after degaussing.

Back to FAQs

What equipment does e-End use for degaussing?

For hard drives, e-End utilizes a NSA-evaluated degausser with 13,500 gauss. Other degaussing equipment is used for backup tapes and other magnetic media, which is also on the NSA Evaluated Product List.

Back to FAQs

Can you degauss a solid state drive (SSD)?

Degaussing will NOT work on a SSD. A solid state drive uses integrated circuit assemblies to store data, unlike traditional hard disk drives. SSDs do not store data magnetically and therefore they are not able to be securely destroyed via degaussing methods.

Back to FAQs

Can a degaussed hard drive be reused?

No, you cannot reuse a hard drive once it has been degaussed. This is because the degaussing process not only removes all the data, but it also removes the startup files. As such, a degaussed hard drive will not boot up.

What is on-site service?

On-site service allows our customers to watch e-End’s specialized destruction at the customer’s facility. We bring our equipment in our secure vehicles directly to the location of your sensitive electronic media and perform destruction services.

The benefits of on-site destruction are:

  • The chain of custody is maintained at your facility until destruction is conducted.

  • Save money on transporting the material to our facility

  • Eliminate the risk of escorting sensitive material to our facility
